Other Ways of Knowing
Somatic Explorations of Wisdom Beyond Mind-Based Insight
The vantage point of the mind is limited. You may have a sense that the answers you are seeking don’t come from thinking more or harder... but how do we find new perspectives, better questions and unexpected answers?
Do you know that feeling when you are trying to figure out what to do about a challenging situation, find the answer to a big life question or make a decision about a really important thing, and your thoughts are like Formula 1 cars going round and round the race course of your mind with a lot of noise and pollution but not really taking you anywhere new?
So, how do we know differently?
The pathway to a more holistic knowing, a place of untapped creativity and of new perspectives leads us via our bodies and our embodied imagination back into connection with the intelligence of life itself.
In animist cultures, we find deep respect for the idea that our physical bodies and our imagination together connect us to the wisdom of Mystery, Soul, Life itself. In our dominant culture, however, we have mostly lost this connection to the animate world around us and to non-conventional ways of knowing. This loss is clear when we look at the state of the world and our struggle to find meaningful responses and solutions to the big personal and collective challenges of our time.
However, there are processes and practices can help us to reconnect and regain a kind of knowing that is not mind-based insight but opens us up to a much larger perspective.
This way of looking at things from a different vantage point is common to most indigenous cultures and is sometimes referred to as harnessing our second attention. It’s an awareness of the non-ordinary world beyond our day to day mental perception. You could also think of it as the place where your intuition lives and where your own deep inner wisdom meets the mystery and wisdom of the outer world.
In the Other Ways of Knowing workshops we practice shifting from our first attention- our day to day awareness where a lot gets filtered out, dismissed as irrelevant or irrational, to our second attention where we stay alive to all that is happening in and around us.
We pick up on the more subtle, inexplicable aspects of life, beyond what we expect to see and what we think of as important. Moving away from linear thinking towards field thinking and relational knowledge, we work with bringing more of our different channels for receiving information and knowing online. We enter a kind of altered state (without substances, just via the wondrous means of our own bodies, simple yet deep practices and the power of intention) and allow our perception to widen so that we can take in afresh what is happening around us, recognizing the aliveness of the world around us and gleaning wisdom for healing and change.
I’ve long dreamed of using magic to move objects with my mind.
The older I get, the more I know my dream is fulfilled each time I pick up my cup.
What is a body?
A spell billions of years in the making.
Soil and storms and the fruit of forests and phytoplankton.
How well familiarity masks our magic.

In Other Ways of Knowing we practice
harnessing the sensory intelligence and imaginal cells of our bodies, hearts and minds
finding meaning and knowledge in the relational dimension of the aliveness of the world
listening more deeply to the ongoing conversation between the life inside and the life all around us
going beyond our everyday desensitization and habits to perceive afresh what's right in front of us
A little bit more about this series
I am going through a transition in my life, with an important decision to make. Recently I felt like I lost my usual way to follow my inner compass. I hoped to get in touch with my inner knowing again and the workshop absolutely met my expectations! I was lead to one of my deepest longings right away and found my way back to embodied remembering. I feel sparkles of joy coming back at unexpected moments and feel hope and faith again.

The Other Ways of Knowing workshops offer
A container for potent alchemy
We weave together the wisdom of the body, the potency of our imagination, and the whispers gleaned from the conversation between inner and outer nature to make gold from the lead of our stuckness, questions and conflicts.
A space of commitment and community
Many of us find it tricky to access this way of being and enquiring in day to day life. A dedicated facilitated space and the supportive presence of curious companions, can help us to step out of the loops of our day to day thinking and practice new ways of perceiving and being.
New perspectives, possibilities and pathways
You may not end up with all the answers to your questions, but you will leave the space with a fresh perspective on what you are grappling with, find better questions, harvest new seeds of enquiry, and sense into new possibilities and pathways forward.
Again I am amazed at how much wisdom is found in sharing, a richness we can not access on our own… feeling so touched by that, again and again… and it was one of my motivations to join…

I joined Other Ways of Knowing from a place of liminality tinged with worry about the shift from the familiar and satisfying experience of full time work and the reliable support and connection of the work community to the potential void of an unknown life without regular work after a busy full time career of more than 35 years. By the end of the workshop I felt delighted curiosity about the mysterious possibilities of life beyond retirement. The next day I was able to join the celebration of my retirement with lightness about the future, combined with love and gratitude towards my colleagues and project partners.
